I got this audiobook because I knew I’d be able to get my son to listen with me。 He’s 16 but his childhood love of Spider-Man was so strong that it will forever be in his heart。 It was the perfect book to put on while we hung out on the deck, enjoying early-summer evenings。I actually enjoyed this more than I anticipated。 I mean, I’m not the target demographic, you know? Excellent audio narration and a great prequel to Insomniac's Spider-Man made for a really good audiobook。 It doesn't exist merely to prop up Spider-Man 2018 but it does a good job of filling in a few gaps while telling its own story with characterizations that feel consistent with the Insomniac Spider-Man universe。 My only quibble was that there were a couple times when Peter suddenly had magical omnipotence and could tell what other characters were thinking as if he had read the same thing I ha Excellent audio narration and a great prequel to Insomniac's Spider-Man made for a really good audiobook。 It doesn't exist merely to prop up Spider-Man 2018 but it does a good job of filling in a few gaps while telling its own story with characterizations that feel consistent with the Insomniac Spider-Man universe。 My only quibble was that there were a couple times when Peter suddenly had magical omnipotence and could tell what other characters were thinking as if he had read the same thing I had from their point of view。 He already has super powers so that felt kind of lazy but overall the quips and the thwips were good 。。。more

Its a great prequel with characters you don't get to see in the game, and it is a little bit more darker in a way, because there are more palpable consequences of being the web crawler with the responsibility it takes。More depth into Mary Jane Watson and their relationship。 It pretty much tell us the background of the Fisk arrest that we see in the game。 Its a great prequel with characters you don't get to see in the game, and it is a little bit more darker in a way, because there are more palpable consequences of being the web crawler with the responsibility it takes。More depth into Mary Jane Watson and their relationship。 It pretty much tell us the background of the Fisk arrest that we see in the game。 。。。more

Could have been written better, but it's not a terrible read。 I liked the little nods to other Marvel characters along the way。 Especially when Spider-Man passed by Dr。 Strange's Sanctuary。 The beginning is a bit like most Spider-Man related stories where is goes through his origin story。 It's a bit boring if you already know it, but could be helpful for newer fans。 And to boot, if a new fan reads this they might not know what certain characters look like! There is very little description of them。 Writers should not assume that everyone will know what their characters will look like。I wish that the scenery had been more descriptive。 Just because we've seen movies of Spider-Man fighting in New York doesn't mean we actually know what it looks like。 As the prequel to the game it would have been cool to get a bit more description about the city or even just a sunset。 How does Spider-Man see New York? What does it sound and feel like to him? Does Peter see it differently? Maybe I expect too much。 I think David Liss would have been better off writing this as a comic book than a novel。 And on another note, this is as close as I can get to playing the game。 The game is not easy for people who don't play video games all the time。 Or maybe my mind just isn't wired to play complicated games in general。 Anyway, I suggest you give this book a shot before you decide whether you think it's stupid or boring。 Most books are worth reading once。 。。。more

I listened to an audiobook version of this procided through Net Galley。 The review is my own。I love Spider-Man and this book is a worthy introduction to a story that takes place in a video game。 MJ and Harry and JJ Jamison, and Kingpin are all there and some newer characters as well。 The book lagged some as it was more a mystery than an action novel。 But, even saying that there was still plenty of enjoyable action sequences and I left it feeling it was worth the listen。

Actual rating is 3。5 stars。This is a book based on the Marvel character and is a prequel to a video game。 In this one, Wilson Fisk is trying to rebrand his reputation and Spider-Man is not buying it。 Meanwhile, there is a copycat Spidey who is tarnishing the real Spidey's image。This was a solid book that exceeded my expectations。 I have read books based in other universes that are based on a game and they didn't work。 This one is a self contained story but one can see how it sets up the story fo Actual rating is 3。5 stars。This is a book based on the Marvel character and is a prequel to a video game。 In this one, Wilson Fisk is trying to rebrand his reputation and Spider-Man is not buying it。 Meanwhile, there is a copycat Spidey who is tarnishing the real Spidey's image。This was a solid book that exceeded my expectations。 I have read books based in other universes that are based on a game and they didn't work。 This one is a self contained story but one can see how it sets up the story for the game。 As for this story we do see familiar concepts like Peter having job troubles or relationship trouble with MJ。 We see him doubting his role as Spider-Man because of these issues。 The author handled all these well。 What I liked about this story is the use of well known established characters and lesser known characters。 We see characters like Kingpin and Norman Osborn while seeing characters like Echo and the Blood Spider。 The final battle was great and it felt like it belonged because of the build up of the story even though this book is a quick read。This is a new author and I have had not the best experiences with books based on video games, This book surprised me as I thought the author did a great job with the characters and the story。 I was engaged throughout and I laughed out loud with one scene when Spider-Man walks into a bar catering to villains。 All in all this was a fun read。 。。。more

"Spider-Man: Hostile Takeover" is pretty much your standard-issue videogame tie-in novel, to a tee: the writing is crisp, while also not altogether memorable, the tie-ins to the main property are plentiful (if not hugely interesting), and the core story itself is just compelling enough to make you want to see where it goes, while also never quite managing to fully rise up to page-turning status。 What does help to elevate "Hostile Takeover" – even just slightly – is the fact that it’s such a quic "Spider-Man: Hostile Takeover" is pretty much your standard-issue videogame tie-in novel, to a tee: the writing is crisp, while also not altogether memorable, the tie-ins to the main property are plentiful (if not hugely interesting), and the core story itself is just compelling enough to make you want to see where it goes, while also never quite managing to fully rise up to page-turning status。 What does help to elevate "Hostile Takeover" – even just slightly – is the fact that it’s such a quick read: at a brief 264 pages, Liss’ novel – or is it novella? – does what most tie-in novels do, but in a far more streamlined way。 That’s appreciated, and honestly makes me wish MORE tie-in novels would adapt the in-and-out-quick approach to their storytelling - why linger longer than necessary, if the core story doesn't support that length? There’s probably not much here that’s going to blow anyone away – even for the most ardent of Spidey fans, this is pretty familiar stuff – but as a quick additional tale that’s set within the world of the (excellent) video game, it does what it needs to。 。。。more

Hostile Takeover is the prequel novel to Insomniac Games’ excellent video game, Marvel’s Spider-Man。 There are a lot of interesting details here that help tie the story to the game。 However, there’s also a lot of extraneous stuff added in that really didn’t enhance the book, nor did it end up having anything to do with the game’s storyline。 I enjoyed this iteration of Echo/Maya。 Blood Spider/Bingham didn’t work very well for me, though, and I wish that subplot hadn’t been included。 As a prequel, Hostile Takeover is the prequel novel to Insomniac Games’ excellent video game, Marvel’s Spider-Man。 There are a lot of interesting details here that help tie the story to the game。 However, there’s also a lot of extraneous stuff added in that really didn’t enhance the book, nor did it end up having anything to do with the game’s storyline。 I enjoyed this iteration of Echo/Maya。 Blood Spider/Bingham didn’t work very well for me, though, and I wish that subplot hadn’t been included。 As a prequel, it would have been much more satisfying to have a subplot that directly related to some aspect of the game, as opposed to taking an existing minor character from the comics and turning him into a one-note distraction。 Overall, the story is well written enough to be worth reading, especially if you loved the game。 Just don’t expect it to have anywhere near the game’s excitement, strong storytelling, and heart。 。。。more

A well written book for sure and it served well to build hype for the release of the Spider-Man Ps4 Game。 However the plot is incredibly derivative of the Echo/Kingpin plot from Daredevil。 The only difference being that Daredevil has been replaced with Spider-Man。 It would make some sense if Echo appeared in the game (given this was a tie in) but she's not even mentioned! I'm thinking back to this novel amid discussions of a second game, and I feel compelled to write about it。 If we're being honest, this had no right to be as good as it was。 I couldn't put it down and I was enamored by the backstories and motivations of the characters。 Interestingly, I wouldn't call myself a fan of Spider-Man, or superheroes in general, for that matter, but the story that's told here doesn't expect you to know everything, and that's important。 You may have only watched a particul I'm thinking back to this novel amid discussions of a second game, and I feel compelled to write about it。 If we're being honest, this had no right to be as good as it was。 I couldn't put it down and I was enamored by the backstories and motivations of the characters。 Interestingly, I wouldn't call myself a fan of Spider-Man, or superheroes in general, for that matter, but the story that's told here doesn't expect you to know everything, and that's important。 You may have only watched a particular movie or read a particular comic a decade ago, but it's fine, the novel is independent of your prior knowledge of Spider-Man and its universe。 It tells you all that you need to know about the characters involved and what drives them, and it properly sets up a universe that is filled with potential。Unfortunately, once you've read this novel, you cannot expect the game's story to live up to the same quality, from a narrative perspective。 That's because the novel realizes its strength and dives deep into characterization, and the game simply isn't capable of doing that。It's also a shame that some of the characters weren't even referenced in the game that followed。 With that said, all I really want right now is for a second prequel novel to get announced, and I really want it to be by the same author because apparently he's really good at what he does。 。。。more

Spider-Man is one of the few characters left in any media where nobody knows his identity, one which has been carefully guarded except on a few occasions。 Many could argue that in recent years there has been the inclusion of too many spider personas, too many who have been genetically altered, or bitten by another rogue spider just because the writers can。 While this is true to some degree the point still stands: Anyone could be under that mask, which means anyone could make up stories or change Spider-Man is one of the few characters left in any media where nobody knows his identity, one which has been carefully guarded except on a few occasions。 Many could argue that in recent years there has been the inclusion of too many spider personas, too many who have been genetically altered, or bitten by another rogue spider just because the writers can。 While this is true to some degree the point still stands: Anyone could be under that mask, which means anyone could make up stories or change the publics' view of this character。 Which is what makes this book a great addition to Insomniacs Series。 Not only does it continue the question of "Who is under the Mask?" but it, like the game, utilizes fairly unknown characters in the Spider-Man Saga。 We all know Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and Even Kraven, but many people had never heard fo Mr。 Negative until the game was released。 Without spoiling which characters appear this book takes unknown characters and forces them into the spotlight in ways that I don't think many people will expect。 While also humanizing every single one。 These are not just beings with incredible powers, these are normal humans struggling to survive in a world where super-powered being exist。 This is just one of the many strengths of a book that takes itself seriously as a prequel, where other books that tie-in to a game either reash elements of the game, this one gives a build-up to the start of the game。 It also gives you a more emotional punch to the sacrifice it took to the destruction of Kingpin, instead of being swept up in it at the beginning of the game, you get to know what it cost the main characters。 What is cost Spider-Man, what it cost Yuri, and even what it cost Mary Jane。 Giving the game even more soul then it previously had。 Which deepens the bonds you end up seeing and feeling, when it gives reason, not every media has to do this, but what Insomniac and David Liss did here creates a perfect medley of needing to read it and not needing the info for the game。 The flaw in the book are very minor and mainly the biggest flaw is lack of Stan Lee cameo, but can't fault the author for not knowing how to write in a character that already exists in the universe。 Jokes aside, the novel does suffer from the same problem the game had: Trying to keep the big villian plot twist a secret。 While it is understandable that it had to be written this way as to not ruin the surprise that people had already guessed, but it made the parts with Peter's lab kind of frustrating。 Referring to his boss as just "Boss", as well as a few moments where they explained a situation and how this boss rectified it, but it all felt weird because other than knowing it was Peter's boss, we know nothing about him and why he'd take the actions he did, especially since the other character was superior to Peter and Peter got the better deal out of the section。 It's a minor flaw that was necessary for the story of the game this sets up, but still weird nonetheless。 Otherwise, if your a fan of spider-man, have or haven't played the game, this is a great read that takes another look at the characters of this universe in a new light。 It meshes well with the story you play out in the game and gives a more emotional punch to the characters in the game that you otherwise might not have felt。 It's worth the read for any fan of Spider-Man。 Excelsior。 。。。more
